Why you should clean up your social media feed

Hmm yes, social media, don’t you just love it how easy it is to break free from reality by spending some time on your beloved online platforms? Well, if that would be time well spent, then yes, but I think most of us experience quite the opposite.

I came to realise that about 60–80% of my feed is generally irrelevant. That’s why I decided to clean it up a little, and here’s why you should consider to do so too.

Time is short

A cliché, maybe, but spending too much time on social media genuinely made me less happy as it felt like a waste of time. Generally, I should have blamed it on my own lack of discipline. I should have put away my phone or close my web browser more often, but I do think cleaning it up regularly would have helped too.

Imagine your social media feed as your own messy living room, you wouldn’t be happy if you’d spend too much time there either. So I’ve tried to make some suggestions…

Imagine your social media feed as your own messy living room, you wouldn’t be happy if you’d spend too much time in there either.

Facebook

Facebook is one of those platforms that over the course of years, has turned from a genuine platform with original content into a marketing madhouse. Remember those pages that posted original and fun content but at one point sold their souls to mediocre advertisers? Yeah.. let’s take a few moments ditch those from your feed, now.

Instagram

Personally, I absolutely love Instagram, but that has not always been the case. I remember spending hours a day on the platform following way too many (irrelevant) accounts. Not only did this lead to unlimited content, but following top model- and supercar accounts made me aim for a way to high standards in my personal life, too (oops).

Clean it up, you’d be surprised how much more satisfying the platform gets if you (only) follow people that actually matter to you. Additionally, use it to your advantage; create or enjoy original content (its out there), interact and have fun. You’d be surprised how different the platform will feel.

Twitter

Oh yes, my beloved friend, we’ve had a love-hate relationship for a while now, but your time has come. Or well, the time to clean up my feed has come. It’s time to put an end to this waterfall of endless news feeds and public opinions.

I know that you might not be active on this platform, but if you are, please choose the accounts you follow wisely. Spend your time efficiently by only following (a limited number of) accounts and don’t get caught up in so-called “shitstorms”. They’re not worth your time, trust me.

To conclude

Social media can be awesome, but we should take time for a genuine cleanup every now and then. Take some time to re-assess what accounts and people matter to you and why, and don’t feel sorry to unfollow those who don’t.

Time is short and you and I can only process a limited amount of information on a daily basis. It would be a shame if we would let irrelevant content dominate what we consume.

Let’s take a brief moment to clean up. I’m sure you’ll feel better the next time you spend time on social media.
